Blood buffering is the process by which the body maintains astable blood pH, crucial for proper enzyme and cellular function. The primary buffer system in blood involves carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) and bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻), which work to neutralize excess acids or bases. This intricate system ensures blood pH remains within the narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45, preventing life-threatening disruptions to bodily functions.
