نبذة مختصرة
Paleontologists study fossils. Fossils are the preserved remains of plants and animals whose bodies were buried in sediments, such as sand and mud, under ancient seas, lakes and rivers. Fossils also include any preserved trace of life that is typically more than 10 000 years old.Fossils play a dual role in the petroleum system: they are essential for both the origin of hydrocarbons and their exploration. Most petroleum originates from the accumulation of microscopic fossils, particularly marine plankton such as foraminifera, radiolarians, and algae. When these organisms die, their organic remains settle to the seafloor and become incorporated into fine-grained sediments
