Biological Safety Levels (BSLs) are containment classifications (BSL-1 to BSL-4) defining lab practices, equipment, and facility design to protect people and the environment from infectious agents, ranging from low risk (BSL-1, minimal threat, basic hygiene) to high risk (BSL-4, deadly airborne pathogens, full isolation suits in dedicated facilities). Each higher level incorporates the requirements of the previous one, with BSL-4 offering maximum containment for severe, untreatable diseases like Ebola.
