Zombie fungi, primarily Ophiocordyceps, are real parasitic fungi that hijack insects (like ants and flies) by invading their bodies, controlling their muscles and potentially their brains via chemicals, forcing them into specific locations (like high on vegetation) for optimal spore dispersal, and then erupting a fruiting body from the dead host to release spores, a gruesome yet fascinating natural phenomenon inspiring horror.
