Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones, slowing down the body's metabolism, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, and depression, often caused by autoimmune attacks (Hashimoto's) or thyroid issues from surgery/radiation. It's managed with daily synthetic thyroid hormone replacement (like levothyroxine) to restore normal function, requiring ongoing blood tests for dosage adjustments.
