Bariatric surgery (weight-loss surgery) alters the stomach or intestines to help severely obese individuals lose weight and improve obesity-related health problems like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, working through restriction (smaller stomach) or malabsorption (bypassing part of the intestine). It's a major procedure requiring significant, permanent lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, for long-term success. Common types include sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, often performed minimally invasively.
