The Age of Shakespeare, coinciding with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603), is often called the "Golden Age" of English drama. This era saw theatre transform from traveling religious morality plays into a booming, professionalized secular industry. Before this period , drama was often performed by "strolling players" in inn yards or town squares. During Elizabeth's reign, the first purpose-built permanent theatres appeared, providing a stable home for new artistic expression
