Th ere are a variety of qualities and characteristics of a human face, which may be responsible for it being perceived as beautiful. Th ese include ‘ ideal ’ proportions, bilateral symmetry, averageness, youthfulness and sexual dimorphism. Hereditary factors and cultural infl uences also play an important part. Any or all may have an eff ect on the human conception of the beautiful, but none fully explains why one face is seen as beautiful and another as unattractive
