Bacterial pneumonia is caused by a pathogenic infection of the lungs and may present as a primary disease process or as the final, fatal disorder primarily in an individual who is already debilitated.
Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in your lungs. The main causes of pneumonia are bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses. This article is about viral pneumonia.
Common causes of viral pneumonia are: Influenza virus A and B, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Human parainfluenza viruses (in children),
Rarer viruses that commonly result in pneumonia include: Adenoviruses (in military recruits), Metapneumovirus, Severe acute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS coronavirus) and Middle East respiratory syndrome virus (MERS coronavirus)
Viruses that primarily cause other diseases, but sometimes cause pneumonia include: Herpes simplex virus (HSV), mainly in newborns or young children, Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), Measles virus, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), mainly in people with immune system problems, Smallpox virus and dengue virus
Opportunistic diseases in a person with HIV are the products of two things: the person’s lack of immune defences caused by the virus, and the presence of microbes and other pathogens in our everyday environment. A partial list of the world’s most common opportunistic diseases and diseases includes: • bacterial diseases such as tuberculosis (TB, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis), Mycobacterium avium complex disease (MAC), bacterial pneumonia and septicaemia (“blood poisoning”) • protozoal diseases such as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), toxoplasmosis, microsporidiosis, cryptosporidiosis, isosporiasis and leishmaniasis • fungal diseases such as candidiasis, cryptococcosis (cryptococcal meningitis (CRM)) and penicilliosis • viral diseases such as those caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex and herpes zoster virus • HIV-associated malignancies such as Kaposi sarcoma, lymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
